Self-Care tips for a Proposal Planner

Being a proposal planner can be the most rewarding job - you are changing people's lives! However, it does come with its challenges. In order to succeed, you need to prioritize self-care.

Delegation is the key to success, it can be challenging to delegate as we all love to be in control but the less weight you have on your shoulders, the easier a task is to complete. If you are in the position to hire an assistant, go for it! The more time you have to concentrate on the finer details the better, and then your assistant can help with the time consuming tasks.

Create systems that work for you, such as calendar blocking. Schedule in your admin days, it can be easy to fall behind on this so by scheduling this in and blocking this day out in your calendar, you have allocated yourself time to keep on top of everything.

Give yourself plenty of time to set up. Your client has agreed to be somewhere for a certain time so make sure you are ready. Obvious right? But there’s nothing worse than a horrible rush five minutes before they are due to arrive. With time you will get faster at setting up and packing away but you never know what could happen. Bad traffic, dead batteries? Who knows? Just make sure you are organized and have given yourself plenty of time for these potential problems.

We all need fuel to function. Eat and stay hydrated. It’s that simple! Events are a busy industry, you have deadlines approaching and sometimes it feels like there’s not enough time in the day. We often have so much to think about on the big day we forget the basics! There should always be enough time to give your body the nutrition it deserves. Get organized for the days you have a proposal, perhaps it is set in a remote spot - so make sure you have packed something to drink and eat.

Exercise is not only good for your creativity, but it also makes us step away from the diary and releases the endorphins that make us feel good. Get some fresh air to help your overall productivity. A good night's sleep is also essential to function well. It helps you think clearly and you will have more energy to pull off the amazing proposal!

Allocate yourself ‘out of office’ hours. When working for yourself it is so easy to work 24/7 but this isn’t always healthy. You need to establish a good routine for yourself so that you optimize your productivity when you do work. Give yourself a time in the day where you no longer click on your emails until the following day. Small rules like this will help you achieve the work/life balance you want.

Learn to say no. We aren’t superhuman and although we will always try our best to be, it's not possible! It is so important that you don’t overload yourself with clients or proposals. It is more important to have fewer things in the diary and for them to be faultless than to overstretch yourself and miss key elements. You may come across a difficult client from time-to-time. If you don’t want to work with them, that’s fine, handle these situations politely and in a professional manner.

You are number one, so care for number one and in return, this will show.
